About

Swimming the Gap is an annual 27km marathon swim from Green Island to Yorkeys Knob, Cairns held on 23 September. It is Australia’s longest ocean swim and has been dubbed Australia's version of the English Channel - albeit much warmer! It has only ever been completed by seven people.

The swim is run with the support of Masters Swimming NQ and raises money for AFL Cape York House Foundation to help close the education gap for Indigenous young people.

Athletes taking part in this year’s event include fifth-generation Cairns local Rodney Lyle, Queensland Health worker Lesa Flip, Cairns swim teacher Kaname Woodfield and  Australian Triple Crown marathon swimmer, Julie Boxsell.

"As one of the first scholarship holders of AFL Cape York House, I am immensely grateful for having the opportunity to complete their education and wellbeing program. I continue to use those foundational skills that were taught in the program ten years later. Not only has this had an immediate effect on my day-to-day life, but it has allowed me to take ownership and change the economic trajectory of my family."

Anthony Nicholls, AFL Cape York House Graduate
